5 Steps to Fibermaxxing Without the Bloat

Updated: Aug 7

Lots of fiber rich foods like nuts, avocado, broccoli, beans and whole grains. text says: Are you fibermaxxing?

The latest TikTok trend, fibermaxxing, has gotten our attention. In an attempt to one up protein, influencers are touting the importance of taking the experts’ advice to add more fiber to our diets. Fibermaxxing is a new concept that encourages us to adhere to an age-old recommendation for fiber intake. Currently, experts suggest that women target 25g and men 38g of fiber daily, however, most Americans only get on average of 15g daily. So why the sudden rage to hit our numbers, or max out like you would with weights at the gym? Because when we properly fiber up, we don’t just see regularity in the bathroom – everything  works better in our bodies from digestion and blood sugar regulation, to mood, energy, and heart health.

Enough fiber means vitamins and minerals can be efficiently absorbed by your body. A healthy gut microbiome supports the production of compounds that influence mood, brain function, and overall well-being. Digestion is slowed and you will feel full faster and longer, so weight loss is often a bonus outcome. You also slow down the absorption of glucose and lessen blood sugar spikes which leads to steady energy and fewer blood sugar crashes and cravings .

In essence, fibermaxxing is not just a TikTok trend, it is a science-backed recommendation from which we can all benefit. How can we improve our fiber intake? Follow these steps:

1.         Determine Your Baseline: In order to know how much fiber you are getting each day, you will need to track it. There are several good apps that can help you with this: Lose It!, MyFitnessPal, or Cronometer. Check in with your trusted medical professional for guidance on what your target should be. Recommendations are a guide and not the rule since individuals are all different and have varying needs.

2.        Slow and Steady Wins the Race: You want to gradually increase your fiber intake so you don’t overload your system. Try adding a handful of blueberries to your breakfast, or maybe go for the side salad at lunch instead of the fries, nut mix instead of chips for your snack. If the change is small, you will be more likely to repeat the action. Whatever you take on, be consistent about it so it becomes a normal part of your routine. Just like a long-cooking stew, slow and low yields a much more tender result than fast and furious.

3.         Blend Before Going All Out: Blending, soaking, and cooking can make fiber-rich foods easier to tolerate as your digestive system adapts. Soups, smoothies, stews, and overnight oats can be a gentler entry point than jumping straight into large salads and bran cereals. Your goal is to go from soft fibers to rough fibers gradually, so you avoid bloating and cramping.

4.        Recruit the Ferments: Your gut bacteria are like the work crew that help process the incoming food and effectively deliver it through your gut. Without enough workers, a sudden influx of fiber is like a truck arriving at a grocery store with no one available to unload it. Think kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut, yogurt, etc.

5.         Hydration, Hydration, Hydration: Fiber absorbs water as it moves through your digestive tract, helping to create softer, bulkier stools that are easier to pass. As you increase your fiber intake, increase your water intake as well. Aim to sip throughout the day rather than chugging large amounts all at once. A well-hydrated digestive system helps fiber do what it does best: keep things moving comfortably and efficiently.

Lastly, the key to fibermaxxing is not to be a TikTok influencer overnight. Remember that when it comes to improving your health, progress begins by starting with one small step. Your body doesn't know whether you added 10 grams of fiber overnight or one extra serving of berries today—it simply responds to consistent habits. Start with something that feels easy and repeatable. A handful of berries, a serving of beans, or a daily yogurt with fruit may not seem like much, but small changes performed consistently are what turn trends into lasting health benefits.
