5 Workplace Wellness Myths Every HR Leader Should Rethink

Coworkers working in a lounge together happily. text reads: HR can't solve burnout with another webinar. here's what actually works

You've invested in a wellness webinar because you genuinely want to support your employees. The topic is relevant, the presenter is engaging, and employees are encouraged to attend. Then the day arrives. Some employees make it, but many don't. Meetings run long, deadlines take priority, and the demands of the workday win.

Those who do attend often leave feeling inspired. They may even learn something new. But then the webinar ends, and so does the momentum.

Without follow-up, accountability, or personalized support, even the best intentions fade. Employees quickly return to the habits and routines they've always known, and the opportunity for lasting behavior change is lost.

The webinar wasn't the problem. It simply wasn't designed to create lasting behavior change.

If we're honest, many workplace wellness initiatives are built on a few common myths.

Myth #1: One Wellness Event Can Change Culture

A single workshop, health fair, or wellness challenge may generate excitement for a day or even a week. But culture isn't built through isolated events.

Healthy workplace cultures are shaped by the everyday experiences employees have with their leaders, their teams, and their work environment. They develop over time through consistent actions, supportive policies, and leaders who model healthy behaviors themselves.

Real culture change starts at the top and is reinforced every day, not once a quarter.

Myth #2: Burnout Is an Employee Problem

Gallup's 2026 workplace research found that 27% of U.S. employees report feeling burned out very often or always. When more than one in four employees are struggling, burnout is no longer just an individual issue. It's an organizational one.

Burnout is rarely caused by a lack of self-care. More often, it stems from unrealistic workloads, lack of autonomy, unclear expectations, poor communication, or feeling unsupported.

Employees can absolutely learn skills to better manage stress, but organizations also have a responsibility to examine the workplace conditions contributing to it. Lasting solutions address both the individual and the organization.

Myth #3: Wellness Should Be Optional and Separate From Work

When wellness is treated as something employees do on their own time, it unintentionally sends the message that their well-being is separate from their work.

If organizations truly believe that healthier employees perform better, collaborate better, and stay longer, then wellness can't be an afterthought.

It needs to become part of leadership conversations, team meetings, manager training, and organizational values. It should be woven into the culture instead of existing alongside it.

Myth #4: Employees Just Need More Resources

Most employees already know they should sleep more, exercise regularly, eat better, manage stress, and take breaks.

The internet has given us more health information than ever before.

Knowledge isn't the barrier, behavior change is.

As health coaches, we rarely meet people who don't know what they "should" do. We meet people who are overwhelmed, exhausted, unsure where to start, or trying to change habits that have been in place for years.

Information alone doesn't create transformation.

Myth #5: Motivation Is Enough

We've all felt motivated after reading a great book, listening to an inspiring speaker, or attending a wellness webinar.

Motivation is powerful, but it's also temporary.

Sustainable change happens when people discover their own reasons for changing, build confidence through small successes, and have someone walking alongside them as obstacles arise.

This is where health coaching makes all the difference.

At Concierge Wellness Coaching, we don't tell employees what they should do. We help them uncover what matters most to them. Using evidence-based approaches like motivational interviewing, we ask thoughtful questions that help people identify their own motivations, strengths, and solutions. Instead of prescribing change, we partner with individuals to create goals that feel realistic and achievable.

We also draw from the principles of positive psychology by helping people recognize what's already working, build on their existing strengths, celebrate progress, and create momentum through small wins. Lasting change rarely begins with perfection. It begins with confidence.

Education Inspires. Coaching Creates Change.

Educational workshops absolutely have a place in workplace wellness. They spark awareness, introduce new ideas, and encourage important conversations.

But awareness is only the first step.

Health coaching is the bridge between education and action.

When organizations invest in helping employees translate knowledge into daily habits, they create healthier people, stronger teams, and more resilient workplaces.

At Concierge Wellness Coaching, our goal isn't simply to deliver another wellness event. We partner with organizations to create lasting behavior change by empowering employees one conversation, one habit, and one success at a time.

Because healthier workplaces aren't built through one webinar.

They're built one person at a time.

If you're ready to see what that looks like for your team, we'd love to talk. A complimentary consultation is a low-pressure way to start the conversation.
